Memory Functions Save Your Life

The memory buttons: M+, M-, MR, MC. Most students never touch them. Big mistake. Here is what they do:

M+ adds the current number to memory. M- subtracts it. MR recalls what you stored. MC clears memory. That is it. Simple but powerful.

Example: Calculate (45 × 23) + (67 × 89). Old way: write down 1,035, probably copy it wrong, mess up the whole problem. Smart way: 45 × 23 = 1,035. Hit M+. Now calculate 67 × 89 = 5,963. Hit M+. Press MR. Answer: 6,998. No paper. No mistakes.

Parentheses Fix Everything

Type 8 + 2 × 5. What do you get? 18. Not 50. The calculator follows order of operations. You forgot. Now your answer is wrong.

Solution: Use parentheses. Type (8 + 2) × 5. Now you get 50. The calculator does what you meant, not what you typed. When in doubt, add parentheses. Too many is better than too few.
